The 75 Part I / La Parte I 75

After a year spent lying
Living under a name not my own
Burrowing into a culture
Into its darkest parts
The door at last stood ajar
A welcome the sane would not desire
But those of us paid to be crazy
Are trained to yearn for
I will not mention the place
No true names or dates
For they fit the term classified
More than most matters of state

Blindfolded
Loaded in trucks
Driven for hours
To what we discovered to be
Nowhere
A camp with four buildings
Barbed wire walls
Armed sentries on patrol
And I took inventory
Of my traveling companions
Revealed at last
75 of us total
All still blinking
From the too bright sun
After hours of darkness
Shown politely to our building
Given a bunk and a pack
A uniform
Told to make and use our beds
For sleep would be essential for what was to come

Awakened before the sun
A hearty morning run
Through vigorous terrain
A jeep with three men beside us
Studying us too closely
I hid in the middle of the pack
And watched as they first two men
Crossed the finish line in smiling victory
And were shot dead
And we all
Those 73 of us remaining
Stopped as still as stone
One of the men in the jeep
Who held the bearing of commander
Spoke very clearly
Plainly, without emotion
"We do not seek those
Who seek to stand out.
We need only those who are
Whispers in the wind
Myths, ghosts"

Mitos, fantasmas "

  8. I feel sorry for those first two...life is often like that, isn't it? those who stand out get shot down or pulled down by others.

Very well written poem! A bit nerveracking to read but that makes it what it is....great work.
