Memories Love Company

I used to be quite nervous when cats were about.

'Ello 'Ello and welcome and welcome back Lords and Ladies, Earls and Pearls, Princes and Roger Nelsons, Dukes and female Dukes.  On our last outing, we took the Wayback machine deep into the past to explore the early days of yours truly.  After a successful return trip to the present (never a guarantee, check your ticket's fine print) and a good charging of the fuel cells, off we go a higgledy piggledy into the great beyond once more.

Shy didn't begin to describe it.  It was a word that flew at and around me constantly as a boy.  Sometimes also as a girl because people would mistake me for one here and there.  Most of my time was spent on my own.  Early school years were OK, but I never had any sort of group of friends, never really fit in anywhere.  I was bright, got great marks and never made a ruckus.  In      those years I had a couple friends I would see from time to time.  I can't really recall what we did to pass the time very well, but it was nice to have someone else to play with.  My best friend, however, was probably my frequent babysitter, Helen.  She was a very old woman and very kind.  She took good care of me on those frequent nights my parents were out drinking.  If I remember right, we watched TV and played card games, maybe board games.  Honestly I mostly just remember she was very nice and very elderly.

My first friend my age was, of course, a girl; my next-door neighbor Lisa. We played with dolls sometimes, ran around outside sometimes, and, most infamously according to our parents, played full-on doctor a couple times. Just a couple of curious 5-year-olds but we sure got read the riot act for that. Sadly, Lisa was only there about a year before moving away and, writing this, I realize I to this day have been trying to find another her, a female who could be a true friend and accept me as I am. They have floated in and out of my life in the years since but, as yet, none have skipped the "floating out" part so the search continues. The fact that all the people closest to me are women is a wonderful part of that search. Guy friends? Ummmm, not really, had some, it was OK, probably sometime again, no hurry.

Lisa and I getting ready to listen to some groovy albums.  This was out kitchen.
But, for the most part, I played alone.  Come 1977, I can remember having the Death Star Playset     which was like the best toy ever.  It had an elevator and a big blaster gun for shooting X-Wings down.  I also can remember getting the very first ever Star Wars figures, sold in a set of 4, and enjoying them so much.  There on the floor of my room, re-creating and re-inventing the scenes from the movies, mixing in my Fisher Price people and vehicles.  One things I never had a shortage of was imagination.  It's still one of my stronger muscles for that matter.  And I would make elaborate block cities on our folding table as well.

Matchbox cars, blocks and, yes, Wonder Woman.  From a young age been a fan of butt-kicking ladies.  Still have that chair.

And then others joined the fray, super heroes.  My first taste of the comic book characters I would follow ever since.

At my grandma's house with a group of plastic friends you will likely not see gather again.

And, on that note, I am setting the DeLorean control panel back to 2013 and releasing you back into the wild.  Don't mind that little plastic bracelet about your ankle.  Darker memories approach on the horizon and don't feel awake enough to pursue them at the moment.  And, as for those wondering why I looked so dazed in my previous pictures, yes, flash bulbs are a distinct possibility (reference my dad blinding Reds 3rd baseman Buddy Bell at spring training 1987.)  Another contributing factor, possibly still high from the booze/dope/acid my mom did during her pregnancy, a revelation she shared just a few years back with me.  Just FYI, that was not one of those darker memories I referenced.  I actually laughed when she told me.

So goodnight, sweet readers.  So appreciate you stopping by and am sending hugs to each one of you, wishing you all the best.  Your being here really brings me joy as do your blogs so THANKS!!!!
