The Dagobah Tree / El Arbol Dagobah

To my blog I welcome you.  For those of you who are not nerdy by nature, have no fear.  This is about quite a bit more than a science fiction film.  But the setting is indeed the movie "The Empire Strikes Back" on the swamp planet of Dagobah.

Young Luke Skywalker has come to this remote place to learn the ways of the mystic "Force" to help fulfill his destiny as a Jedi knight.  His teacher, ancient and infinite, the unassuming Yoda.  The training is difficult due to both in its demands and to Luke's inability to trust and focus.

During this training, Luke encounters a part of the swamp, a cave opening, that makes him feel cold amidst the steamy heat.  Yoda informs him this place is strong with the dark side of the force, a domain of evil, and that Luke must enter.  Nervously, Luke asks what he will find inside and Yoda says "only what you take with you."  When Luke begins to strap on his weapons, Yoda quickly informs them he will not need them, but Luke pays no heed and takes them anyway.

Upon descending into the murky depths of the cave, young Skywalker is astounded to encounter the man he hates the most of all, the man who murdered his previous teacher and friend, Darth Vader.  Wordlessly they engage in battle.

And Luke emerges victorious, cutting the head off of his rival.  But he receives no moment of glory when the mask of Vader explodes to reveal the face of Luke behind it.  Luke struggles with the ghastly image as Yoda gives a deep sigh from his perch outside.  His pupil had failed a vital test, one essential to his training and his very self.

I had thought of this scene the other day in responding to something on an Instagram picture of mine.  I had speculated in the caption of one of my pictures:  Is social media the great connection to the world it seems or merely a new, more insidious form of isolation?  And people were telling me it could be both which, of course, is the correct answer, but the question was answered best for me thinking of Yoda's words.  What will I find in social media, what will I find in life?  Only what I take with me.  If I come here armed to the teeth, hiding behind thick armor, taking every step ever so carefully, even something that seems like a great victory is all lies.  Online friends, admirers, those who praise you, seem to care, who do they care about?  Are you sure its a real you?  There is infinite potential in this tree we share, even though, at its heart, I truly believe evil has the bigger hold on it than we do.  And the greatest damage this evil can do is not steal your identity or stalk you, the illusions it can create is the most dangerous peril of all.  It plays on your fears, changes your thoughts, creates crippling doubt, destroys perspective.  I see it every day, I fight it every day.  I decide every day its worth it even if just barely.  Because this place is as much a test for me as the tree was for Luke and, just like him, in I must go.  Except that I must go in fully as myself, unarmed, trusting, if I ever expect to make a difference, if I want to be a light in the darkness.

Ah, Yoda, such a wise creature, your post reminds me that I should watch the old trilogy again, it's a long time ago :-).
This subject is very interesting, and I had made a long comment about it, but decided to delete it, it's the language barrier that doesn't seem to make me choose the right words :-). Grrr!!! LOL! Social media are not really my thing to be honest, I blog and use Flickr, and I really enjoy the interaction with fellow bloggers, but such things like Facebook are not for me. Way too exposed and even scary! I'm the same person online as in real life, but I don't think you can really, really get to know a person just online, there's a lot that isn't there: facial expression, body language, scent (yes, it sounds primitive but nevertheless...).

Of course there will be evil in most things, it always finds its way.Yet there is good in it too. One can care about other people yet fear them at the same time. For instance, the child that sees a person struggling and wants to help but is aware of the need to be cautious. Or the fact you want to be kind or polite to someone though you don't know them well. Online, people can be anything and it is important not to be to be led into a situation you don't want to be in.
You are right though, there are many illusions online. You can think things are a certain way and they are not.

I never know what exactly you are getting at though. What is it you seek online? What are you gaining illusions from?

Interesting analogy...interesting subject...Obsession of some (many?) people with social media really puzzles me. And annoys sometimes...like when you are with someone and the person keeps checking his/her facebook/instagram/twitter or whatever else every five minutes. I don't know about others but I am as same me in virtual world as I am in real one. Just don't see the point in pretending to be someone else: what's the fun if people follow/admire/befriend not the real you? Better less but who accepts you as you are...

Wise words. Everything should be in good measure, it becomes dangerous when it becomes obsessive. :) :)

You said Grr and talked about scent, you are my kind of animal :) And I adore people who do no try and be someone else online, just honest and real. Those who choose to wear a mask are usually easy to spot. Thanks for the sweet words you animal you :)

Social Media was crafted with a very specific purpose, and a good one at that; bring the world closer together. The problem is the very fear you discuss. This new internet world could have been anything humanity wanted it to be, but fear has infected it. I am working on caring about people more in general, that is one thing I seek here. And as for helping or not helping a person in danger, or ending up somewhere you don't want to be, those are a few of the types of illusions I am seeing here. What if it was actually impossible for you to end up someplace you didn't want to be? Because it is. What if it was possible for you to intervene in any situation your heart told you to without any true harm ever befalling you? Because it is. We have been taught to be afraid, actually that's not true. We've been taught to be brave but cautious but all we really hold onto is the cautious.
Most of all what I seek online are the people like me, those who question, those who dare, those who feel openly, strongly freely, those who understand that Winny Churchill was spot on about fear. Well, all that and tights of course ;) Thanks for the great comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to read through it.

Yes, I have dated the phone checker girls before. But never twice :) My phone is with me always but when I have company it stays put away. Right in front of my always wins over cyberland. You have a very genuine presence here. It is in your words, your eyes, your smile. People mostly have no idea how quickly their eyes give them away. And I certainly agree that popularity is not my goal here. I just search for people who are comfortable with me as I am, no judging just kindness and acceptance and encouragement. It is proving a tough task, but I have other goals here in the meantime. You are a big help to me, dear, and I really appreciate it.

Every positive has a negative. So you can always find evil as much as you find goodness too. That is nature's way of striking a balance I guess :) But what's more important is to be genuine be it on Social media or otherwise.

I do agree with you! It was very clever connecting it with this famous scene from Star Wars. Internet can certainly create illusions or it makes creating illusions more easy. Just like that tree it can reflect our fears and make us behave in a certain way...yes, there is a danger in it but so there is in life. In real life people often choose to see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe....and often making them change their opinion about us is not only tiresome but futile. So, the best we can do is try to be as straighforward as we can...

So, to conclude....Social media can be both, but there is a definite danger in it if we're not careful. Have a lovely night! Sweet dreams.

Great read and thoughts and especially the content on social media.I always hope and pray that everyday we still remain true to ourselves despite the pressure that comes with all the social media that only indirectly or directly suggest that everything ought to be perfect or else its seen worthless.
Have a wonderful day.

Yes, the curse of expected perfection, from ourselves and others. How little we forgive what we see as blemishes. That is why acceptance is so big for me, of myself and others. It really is all that matters to me in regards to people these days. Thanks for the great comment :)
